Horace Eugene "Gene" Carpenter,98, passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at Suncoast Hospice Care Center. He was born on December 3, 1918 in Elk Garden, West Virginia. He grew up in Philippi, West Virginia. He attended Alderson-Broddus College, West Virginia Business College and Pittsburgh Art Institute where he was in class with Norman Rockwell. He married and had a daughter before joining the army. After his discharge he had a divorce. While on his way to Florida to seek employment he met Phyllis Mitchell and decided to stay in Beckley, West Virginia. They later married and moved to Clearwater, Florida. In 1987 he retired and moved into a house in Oldsmar that he helped build.
He was active in Community United Methodist Church, Lions Club, Elks, Moose, Oldsmar Falcons, and he received three awards from Oldsmar Chamber of Commerce while volunteering there. In 1994 he received the City of Oldsmar Council/Manager Award of Recognition.
Many of you will remember him by the many pieces of furniture he made and other pieces he repaired.
He is survived by his daughter, Jeannette, Hoffman Settles of North Carolina, two grand-daughters, four great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.
