Gerald Michael "Mike" Barker

Gerald Michael "Mike" Barker, 73, of Oldsmar, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026. Mike was born on April 18, 1953, in Kingsport, Tennessee, to James and Martha Barker, both of whom preceded him in death. Mike came from humble beginnings. In the late 1950s, his family relocated from Tennessee to Tampa, Florida, where he grew up alongside his brother, Ronnie, and sister, Pam. Mike loved reminiscing about his childhood adventures—from driving old junk cars through the woods where the University of South Florida now stands to swimming in the Hillsborough River and working at a local nursery as a teenager. His love for the outdoors and nature began early and stayed with him throughout his life. In 1969, Mike married Cheryl, and together they welcomed three wonderful children: Chad, Melissa, and Joshua. Mike began working in the earthmoving industry at a young age alongside his father in the family's small construction business. His dedication and strong work ethic led him to David Nelson Construction in 1972 at just 19 years old. Over the course of nearly five decades, he built an extraordinary career, advancing from moving dirt to operating heavy equipment before ultimately serving as General Superintendent and Vice President. Mike earned the respect of everyone who worked alongside him through his leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment. In 2000, Mike met the love of his life, Melisa Brooks. They married on April 1, 2005, and built a wonderful life together in Oldsmar, Florida, where they raised Melisa's three children: Joshua, Brandi, and Jeffrey. Together they shared a passion for adventure, boating, fishing, and traveling. Some of their happiest memories were made at their ATV retreat in the mountains of West Virginia, where they spent countless hours riding side-by-sides with family and dear friends. Mike embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved boating, fishing, golfing, playing pool, and spending time with his many lifelong friends. A true adventurer, he earned his pilot's licenses for both helicopters and airplanes. He proudly owned a helicopter for more than 20 years and also enjoyed owning an airplane, fulfilling a lifelong passion for aviation. Those who knew Mike will remember his larger-than-life personality, infectious smile, and generous heart. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand and found genuine joy in giving to others without expecting anything in return. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome, valued, and loved. His kindness, sense of humor, loyalty, and unwavering generosity left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Melisa Brooks-Barker; his children, Chad M. Barker (Mary), Melissa Marie Amaden, and Joshua Barker; his stepchildren, Joshua Brooks, Brandi Jackson (Tiger Jackson), and Jeffrey Brooks; his cherished grandchildren, Erik Barker, Bethany Barker, Morgan Hussey, Colin Hussey, JJ Brooks, Parker Pielak, Walker Jackson, Bryker Jackson, Carter Brooks, and Jeffrey Brooks; his treasured great-granddaughter, Hazel Vega; along with his brother, Ronnie Barker (Brenda), sister, Pam (Aaron), extended family, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him. Mike's legacy is one of hard work, adventure, generosity, and unconditional love. He lived life to its fullest, cherished every moment with family and friends, and leaves behind memories that will forever be treasured. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
