Marjorie Kumpu Obituary

Marjorie (Duke) Kumpu, 93, formally of Townsend, Massachusetts gained her angel wings as she passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, January 18th, 2022 at her home in Palm Harbor, Florida. Marjorie was born in Gardner, Massachusetts October 1, 1928, the daughter of the late Oren and Laura (Seeley) Duke. She grew up with her dear brother, George E. Duke, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts and graduated from Fitchburg High School. She and her husband, Walter R. Kumpu, married, built a home and raised two boys in West Townsend, Massachusetts. They spent their summer weekends at their lake camp in New Hampshire and loved to entertain. Her husband, Walter, passed away in August 1981, leaving Marjorie to raise her two boys. An independent and strong woman, she valiantly took on the task. Marjorie was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Fitchburg and Townsend Congregational Church. She worked as Townsend Tax Collector for 19 years and retired in that position. Marjorie was known for her annual Townsend Daffodil Day Event, raising money for the American Cancer Society. She loved to cook and had a wonderful collection of recipes that she shared, always with a secret ingredient that made it extra special. Marjorie established her winter residence in Palm Harbor, Florida shortly after her son David married. Her life was filled with joy when she finally had grandchildren and became known as, Grammy. The adventure continued as she cherished every moment with her grandchildren; drawing, baking, cooking, playing card games, attending their shows, having a tea party or spa day. Always the life of the party, Marge loved to get ‘Out and About’; a drive, a trip to the beach or on the boat, a new restaurant, a show or shopping. She was always ready to entertain, had plenty of stories and cherished a good conversation. At the age of 93, she was blessed with a full life. She is pre-deceased by her husband and brother. Marjorie is survived by her son, Walter R. (Chuck) Kumpu, Jr.; son David B. Kumpu and daughter-in-law Janet L. Kumpu; grandchildren Aili and Heidi Kumpu and Bruce Pailey; nephews David and Jeffrey Duke and their families; and extended family and friends.
